Effingham Performance CenterLocated on the north side of Effingham along Outerbelt West, is a 1,564-seat theatre that hosts 60 performances a year. Local, regional and national acts are scheduled to perform, with categories including Country, Southern Gospel, Pop/Top 40, Contemporary Christian, Comedy, Jazz, Dance, Classical and Blue Grass. Several nationally recognized performers will take the stage during the theatre’s first season, with acts including B.B. King, Marie Osmond, Charlie Daniels Band, The Oak Ridge Boys, Gin Blossoms, Bill Cosby, Ron White, Tracy Lawrence, Mark Chesnutt. Cross at the CrossroadsLocated on the south side of Effingham, stands nineteen stories tall along side one of America’s most traveled Interstate corridors. Approximately 53,600 people view the 198-foot tall symbol of love and hope each day. The open arms of the Cross, which expand 113 feet, are a welcoming signal to the approaching travelers. MY Garage Corvette MuseumLocated on the northeast side of Effingham, is a one-of-a-kind museum that houses vintage Corvettes and thousands of pieces of Corvette history and memorabilia. The museum is owned by MidAmerica Motorworks and is headed by Corvette enthusiast Mike Yager, owner of MidAmerica. The museum is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Sculptures on the AvenuesAn annual outdoor art exhibit that brings an array of artwork to Downtown Effingham and features some of the Midwest’s best known and unknown sculptors. In 1997, the Effingham Community Committee for the Arts formed and raised over $60,000 to commission Leonardo Nierman’s Flame of Hope. The Sculpture on the Avenues project followed less than two years later and now has grown into an exhibit featuring over 20 permanent pieces that are joined each year by selected pieces. Wonderland in LightsThis display brings the holiday spirit to town each year. The City of Effingham hosts Wonderland in Lights in Community Park, located just off Temple Avenue, beginning the first Friday in December and extending to Christmas Day. The drive-through light exhibit includes a variety of lighted holiday scenes from reindeer flying, to Santa stuck in the fireplace, to a Nativity scene. Hours are from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. For more information, visit www.visiteffinghamil.com.
Evergreen Hollow ParkOne of Effingham’s four parks that offers activities for visitors of all ages. The Kluthe Aquatic Complex, located in the park, includes a large leisure pool with water slide and water play equipment. The pool is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day from 12:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The park also features a tree walk with approximately 85 species of trees indigenous to Illinois, with each marked with a plaque including the common and Latin name of each species. Ballard Nature CenterLocated just minutes west of Effingham nestled into a wooded area just off of the National Road, U.S. 40. Miles of wooded trails, dozens of species of birds, and the natural setting offers a true outdoor experience. Dioramas and interactive exhibits offer entertainment and effortless education on the flora and fauna of this region. The trails and outdoor area are open from dawn until dusk. The center on the grounds is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday. For more information, call (618) 483-6856.
Lake SaraAn 800-acre recreational lake nestled into a wooded shoreline and encircled by a winding road. Spend a day, a week, or a season on the shores of Lake Sara.
