EFFINGHAM FIRE DEPARTMENT - NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS - MAY 2007
2007 Safety Essay Contest
Kenneth Hayes - Effingham Fire Department
The Effingham Fire Department recently held its annual Essay Contest. This year’s topic was the Importance of Exit Drills In The Home, also known as an E.D.I.T.H. plan.
This is the second year that the Effingham Fire Department has sponsored the Essay Contest. Participation in the event is completely voluntary and it is open to the local junior high school students. This includes Sacred Heart Grade School, the Effingham Junior High School, and St. Anthony Junior High. In the two years of the contest we have had a good response. A winner is chosen from each participating school.
This year we received several well written essays, it was obvious that a lot of time and effort went into the work. The Public Education Officer with the Effingham Fire Department, Firefighter Dick Kenter reads and evaluates the essays.
The winners are awarded a certificate and the honor of having their names placed on the front line engines of the department for one year. This year’s winners are Lauryn Ragland from Sacred Heart School and Alexis Ronan from Effingham Junior High. Lauryn’s name has been placed on Engine 575, which responds out of the Central Fire Station.
Alexis’s name has been placed on Engine 576, which responds out of Station 3, the South Station. These two young ladies did an excellent job and the Effingham Fire Department would like to congratulate them on their accomplishments.
