Christmas Trees at Dr. Wright's House Fundraiser

The Christmas Trees at Dr. Wright's House event has been extended to two weekends. The 18 room Dr. C.M. Wright house will be decorated with trees provided by Altamont Chamber of Commerce members.

The public may tour the house and see the trees on Saturday and Sunday, November 24 and 25, 2007 from 1 tp 5 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, December 1 and 2, from 1 to 5 p.m . Admission is $5 for adults and $1 for students.

As part of the fundraiser event, Midland State Bank has donated a festive decorated Christmas Tree. The tree may be seen at the bank's location inside Martin's IGA Plus before November 23. Purchase raffle tickets for the tree at Midland State Bank in Martin's IGA or the Jefferson Street bank prior to the event or at the Dr. Wright House. The drawing will be at 5 pm on Sunday, December 2. The winner will be notified. This event will help provide operating expenses for The Wright House Property, Not for Profit.

In 1870 Dr. C.M. Wright moved his medical practice to Altamont. In 1889, he built the stately brick home for his family. The next generation to live in the home was his son, Dr. Wright II, who practiced medicine in Altamont from 1902 to 1967. When his grandson, Attorney Charles Wright III, retired, he returned to his boyhood home. When he died in 2001, the house was left in a trust to be preserved, maintained, and operated as public institution.

Described as a time capsule, this 18 room house-museum features possessions of three generations. Many of the furnishings were purchased when the house was built. Items used by both doctors in the Wright Medical Building are displayed in the former hired man's room. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
