The Effingham City Police Department is the location of one of the Public Safety Answering Points (PSAP) in Effingham County. Two trained telecommunicators are on duty 24/7 to answer emergency calls and provide assistance for police, fire, and EMS. If 911 is dialed by a city resident and the PSAP located in the Effingham Police Department is busy the call will be routed to the back-up PSAP located in the Effingham County Sheriff's Department.

Telecommunicators also handle non-emergency phone calls for the residents of the City, which may include weather related questions, dead animal in roadway, asking for directions, power outages, and barking dog complaints. Telecommunicators participate in events such as Shop with a Cop, Relay for Life, Sunrise Rotary Halloween Parade, Easteregstravaganza, career fairs, senior fair, county fair. and the state fair.
