Commissioner Don Althoff

Don resides in Effingham with his wife, Carol. They have two children: Jamie (husband Nate) Niemerg, who resides in Edwardsville, and Clint (wife Sasha), who resides in Effingham. They also have 4 grandchildren, 2 girls and 2 boys.

Don graduated from St. Anthony High School in 1970 and then received a Culinary Arts degree from the Culinary Institute of America in 1972. He then became a chef at the Ramada Inn for 16 years before changing careers. He moved to the printing business and was employed by World Color Press for four years then moved on to work for Forbes Magazine for 19 years. In 2001 he opened Quizno’s Subs in Effingham and operated it until 2011.

Don has been involved in numerous local activities. He was a volunteer fire fighter for 34 years. He served on the Effingham County Board for 9 years.  He is also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Effingham Country Club, and St. Anthony Parish.  Don is an avid hunter and golfer.

Don has served as a Commissioner since 2011. He as enjoyed seeing the progress in Effingham and is excited to see what the next four years have in store. It is his honor and privilege to be a councilman for the City of Effingham.
