Relative to the tragedy out in Oakland, CA where an artist conclave in a converted warehouse caught fire and killed as many as 40 people on December 2nd…

There is important evidence as to why this horrible incident occurred.

The images of the warehouse called, “Ghost Ship,” before the fire look like they could be on an exam for fire marshals where applicants have to identify all the hazards they see.

The recent Town Hall meeting on recycling was a success. I was very happy with the way the meeting progressed. Interesting perspectives and good ideas abound. And passion. The attendees were very respectful of each other and of the City and that was very much appreciated. It is clear there is a solid core of recycling advocates who believe they can convert the rest of the community. And I believe they may be right. The City Team will now process this input and begin working with the sanitation industry to hopefully take a step in the right direction.

The Effingham community has wrestled with the issue of the burning of yard waste for some time.  Efforts to create a turnkey solution that includes curb side pickup of regular trash, yard waste, and recyclables is under examination and experimentation.  HSHS St. Anthony’s Hospital has a big information push going on right now to mitigate as much burning and air pollution as possible.  The Effingham Water Authority just banned burning on Sundays.  Many submit it is time for the City of Effingham to take a step in that direction.  It seems a modified burning ban can be a happy medium.

As we dive into 2016, I’d love to hear what you think the City of Effingham needs to be working on this year.

We’re developing the Fiscal Year 2017 Budget so this is a great time to help us create our targets and objectives.

What do you want to see done in Effingham?

Now and in the long term?

All the best,

Mayor Bloemker

Due to early retirement, the Effingham Police Dept lost a net-effect of five officers over the course of the past 12 years.

The prevailing sentiment has been to see how well the City can get by without replacing them.

At this juncture, Police Chief Mike Schutzbach and City Administrator Jim Arndt have witnessed enough of a struggle with effective staffing of shifts… and a big enough increase in overtime expenses… that they have approached the City Council with a request to add four more officers to the police department.

Speaking of hot topics… what is your position on burning yard refuse in the city limits?

There are very credible positions on both sides of this issue.

But let’s face it… burning yard refuse creates air pollution.  That is an indisputable fact.  But at issue is how much air pollution we are willing to allow.

It appears that we must ultimately recognize the health ramifications when we allow any burning.

Should we ban burning all together?

Should we allow burning on certain days?

During certain months?
