Fire Chief Bob Tutko has been a member of the Illinois Fire Service for over 40 years, beginning his fire service career as a Volunteer Firefighter with the Frankfort Fire Protection District in January 1979 before joining the Downers Grove Fire Department in 1987. During his time with Downers Grove, Bob served as Firefighter-Paramedic, Lieutenant and Acting Battalion Chief before being promoted to Deputy Chief of Administrative Services in 2001. Chief Tutko supervised the Fire Prevention Bureau and Emergency Medical Services Division. He was the project manager for the construction of the departments new Administrative Center/ Fire Station/Training Facility.
In 2010, he accepted the position of Deputy Chief of Operations with the Oak Lawn Fire Department where he developed a number of programs including the creation of the department’s first Bike Medic program that was very popular with the residents and elected officials.
Chief Tutko also served as the Fire Chief with Lincoln Charter Township in Stevensville, Michigan before being offered the Operations Chief position with the Oak Lawn Fire Department for a second time which he accepted. Chief Tutko also served 17 years as an elected Fire District Trustee with the Frankfort Fire Protection District.
Chief Tutko is a 19 year member of the Chicagoland Speedway Fire-Safety Team serving as Crew Chief (on track) Fire Truck Supervisor. Chief Tutko holds a master’s degree in Public Safety Administration from Lewis University and a Bachelor of Science Degree from Southern Illinois University. He holds numerous Fire Service Certifications including Illinois Chief Officer, Fire Prevention Officer, Safety Officer, Arson Investigator, and Fire Service Instructor. He is also an Illinois Certified Paramedic, State of Michigan Certified Emergency Medical Technician, and Firefighter II.
Chief Tutko and his Wife Patti, a High School English Teacher, have 3 grown children and 4 grandchildren.
