Do I need a building permit?

Building permits are required to construct, enlarge, alter, remove, demolish, repair, improve, or convert a building or structure. This also includes swimming pools, signs, and accessory (storage) buildings.

Some projects don’t require a permit. If you need help determining if your project requires a building permit, please contact the Building Official Office at (217) 342-5300 extension 3.

Prior to getting a building permit, you should check with the Building and Zoning division to make sure what you want to do is allowed.

To apply for a building permit, you need to:

  • Complete an application form
  • Provide construction and site drawings
  • Pay building permit fees

We will inspect your project as work progresses to make sure everything is safe and meets codes and regulations.
