Register as a contractor
Anyone doing work on a building needs to register with us as a contractor. This applies to licensed contractors as well as if you are a homeowner doing the work yourself.
Building permits cannot be issued if the person doing the work is not registered.
Before you start
If you are a general contractor, you will need to provide copies of:
- $20,000 contractor or license and permit bond
- Proof of liability insurance
- Proof of worker’s compensation insurance (if applicable)
- Certificate of additional insured - designated person or organization
If you are an electrical contractor, you do not need to provide these items. Electrical contractors need to provide a copy of their registration or license from another municipality in Illinois. If you are not licensed within Illinois, you will need to take the electrical license exam.
