K-9

K-9 functions

The Effingham Police Department utilizes two full-time Police K9s, K9 Kona and K9 Siren, both of which are strong social police dogs.  K9 Kona and K9 Siren are dedicated to protecting and serving their community.  K9 Kona and K9 Siren are each assigned to a specific full time police officer known as a handler.  These working dogs and their dedicated handlers have worked with our vendor kennels and equipment suppliers to make sure our 4-legged heroes are properly trained and outfitted to ensure safe and ethical working conditions.

Our working dogs are specially selected for their drive, intelligence, and social temperament to make them a great addition to our ranks.  These working dogs and their handler attend a 6 week-long training academy, undergo yearly re-certifications, and train continuously year-round to continue to be the best K9 teams they can be.  Each of our K9s is trained and certified in:

  • Narcotics detection
  • Tracking
  • Article searching
  • Criminal apprehension
  • Handler protection

We are extremely proud that our K9 program remains fully funded directly by the generosity and support of our local businesses and community members.
